Dryer Vent Code Requirements in Texas (IRC M1502)
Texas follows the International Residential Code for dryer vent installations. Many DFW homes have code violations that create fire hazards and need professional correction.
Texas Dryer Vent Building Codes
Texas municipalities follow the International Residential Code (IRC), specifically Section M1502 for clothes dryer exhaust.
Key IRC M1502 Requirements
Maximum Vent Length: 35 Feet
Each 90-degree elbow deducts 5 feet, each 45-degree elbow deducts 2.5 feet.
Duct Material: Rigid Metal Required
Accepted: rigid galvanized steel, rigid aluminum, semi-rigid aluminum (transition only). Not permitted: vinyl duct, foil duct, corrugated flex duct.
Exterior Termination Required
Must terminate outside with a backdraft damper. Cannot terminate in attics, crawl spaces, garages, or wall cavities.
No Screens on the Termination
IRC M1502 prohibits screens because lint catches on them. Bird guards with large openings are permitted in some jurisdictions.
Joints Must Be Sealed
All joints must be mechanically fastened and sealed with UL-listed foil tape. Do not use screws (they catch lint).
Common Code Violations in DFW Homes
Vinyl or Foil Duct
The most dangerous violation – still found in thousands of DFW homes. Vinyl is combustible and can melt or ignite.
Excessive Length
Many two-story DFW homes exceed the 35-foot maximum with bend deductions.
Termination in Attic or Garage
Dumps hot, moist, lint-filled air into enclosed spaces – fire and mold hazard.
Cost of Code Correction in DFW
- Vinyl/foil duct replacement: $150-$300
- Vent rerouting for length compliance: $300-$800
- Attic/garage termination correction: $400-$1,000
- Backdraft damper installation: $75-$150
