Burning Smell from Dryer? What to Do Right Now
A burning smell from your dryer is a serious warning sign that should never be ignored. Here is what to do immediately and what causes it.
Stop the Dryer Immediately
If you smell something burning while your dryer is running, stop the dryer immediately. Do not wait for the cycle to finish.
Immediate Steps
- Turn off the dryer – Press stop or turn the dial to off
- Do not open the dryer door immediately – If there is a lint fire inside, opening the door introduces oxygen
- Feel the dryer – If the exterior is extremely hot, something is wrong
- Check the exterior vent – Go outside and check if the vent flap is open
- If you see smoke or flames – Call 911 immediately, evacuate your family
Common Causes of Burning Smell
Lint Buildup in the Vent (Most Common)
Accumulated lint gets superheated when airflow is restricted. The lint can smolder or ignite, producing a burning smell long before visible flames appear.
Lint Around the Heating Element
Lint that bypasses the trap can accumulate around the heating element inside the dryer.
Crushed or Kinked Transition Duct
A crushed flex duct behind the dryer traps lint and restricts airflow.
Failed Thermostat or Thermal Fuse
If the dryer’s safety thermostat fails, the dryer can overheat.
New Dryer Break-In Period
Brand new dryers sometimes produce a slight burning smell during the first few uses. This should disappear after 2-3 loads.
Prevention for DFW Homeowners
- Schedule annual professional dryer vent cleaning
- Clean the lint trap after every single load
- Never run the dryer when you leave the house or go to sleep
- Check the exterior vent regularly to make sure the flap opens
- Replace vinyl or foil duct with rigid metal duct
