Blue Flue Appointment Preparation & Jobsite Requirements

To help us complete your chimney, fireplace, or dryer vent service safely and efficiently, please review the following jobsite requirements before your appointment.

Serving the entire Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio metro areas - chimney cleaning, chimney repair, chimney inspection, dryer vent cleaning, dryer vent repair, and fireplace services.

Best Time to Schedule Preventative Maintenance in Texas

The best time to schedule annual chimney maintenance and dryer vent maintenance is usually spring and summer.

  • You avoid peak-season delays
  • Small issues can be repaired before cold weather
  • Odors, soot buildup, and vent blockages are addressed early
  • You reduce the risk of emergency no-heat or unsafe venting situations during busy months

Fall and winter appointments are still available, but high-demand periods may require rescheduling if emergency calls take priority.

All Appointments

Before We Arrive

These steps apply to every Blue Flue appointment - cleaning, inspection, repair, or installation

1

Clear the work area

Remove fragile, valuable, or sentimental items from the area near the appliance, fireplace, stove, or work zone.

  • Provide 5-6 feet of clear space around the appliance or service area
  • Move electronics, decor, and anything easily damaged
  • Ensure we can access the appliance connection point and vent/chimney area
2

Adult decision-maker must be present

The homeowner, or a designee 18 years or older with authority to approve and sign off on the completion of services, must be present for the duration of the appointment.

3

Close nearby windows and doors

Help minimize dust migration during service by closing windows and doors near the work area before we arrive.

4

Report any recent home changes

Keep us informed of any recent home improvements made after the original estimate that may affect access or setup conditions, including but not limited to:

  • A new roof or re-roofing
  • Solar panel installation
  • Fencing changes or additions
  • Exterior construction or landscaping
5

Secure pets and children

For safety and efficiency, secure pets and keep children away from the work area during the appointment.

6

Payment is due upon completion

Payment is due when service is completed unless otherwise arranged in writing.

Accepted payment methods: Credit/debit card, check, cash, Zelle. Financing options available for larger projects - ask us for details.

Service-Specific Preparation

Prep by Service Type

Select your appointment type below for additional preparation steps specific to your service

Cleaning & Inspection Prep

Chimney cleaning, chimney inspection, dryer vent cleaning

Let the appliance and venting cool completely

The appliance and venting system must be cool to the touch before we arrive.

  • Do not light a fire for 24-36 hours before your appointment
  • Remove ash, soot, and coals from the firebox or stove if applicable
  • If the system is hot or unsafe to service, the appointment may need to be rescheduled and a service fee may apply

Prepare for interior and exterior access

Depending on the service type and scope, we may need access to:

  • Interior appliance/fireplace area
  • Attic, garage, utility room, or laundry area
  • Exterior chimney/termination area
  • Roof access (when required and safe)

Have manuals available (if applicable)

If you have a gas appliance, pellet stove, insert, or specialty unit, keep the owner’s manual available if possible. This helps our technician verify specifications and settings.

Know which inspection level you need

Level 1 Chimney Inspection

Visual inspection of readily accessible portions of the chimney and venting system. Standard for routine annual maintenance.

Level 2 Chimney Inspection

More detailed inspection, often including camera equipment. Recommended for real estate transactions, appliance changes, insurance claims, or storm damage.

Repair & Installation Prep

Chimney repair, chimney liner, dryer vent repair/rerouting, fireplace install

Important: Install and repair appointments have stricter readiness requirements. Please review these carefully to avoid lost-time fees and rescheduling.

Photos may be required before dispatch

Photos documenting completed prep work may be required before our crew is dispatched for certain installations or repair appointments.

A tentative installation date may be provided, but if the site is not ready when our crew arrives, the quoted work will be rescheduled.

Third-party work must be done before we arrive

If your job requires work by another contractor - electrician, gas fitter, plumber, HVAC, etc. - or work outside the Blue Flue scope, it is your responsibility to ensure that work is completed before our arrival.

Coordinate all required third-party trades in advance to avoid delays and fees.

Furnace or boiler chimney liner coordination

If your chimney is being lined for a furnace or boiler, coordinate with your licensed plumbing/heating/HVAC professional after liner installation so the appliance can be properly connected, adjusted, and operated for optimal efficiency.

Blue Flue handles the liner - your HVAC/plumbing pro handles the appliance reconnection.

Incomplete prep - fees and rescheduling

  • If required prep work is incomplete upon arrival, a lost-time fee may apply and the project will be rescheduled
  • If you request that your project be completed across multiple visits due to delays not caused by Blue Flue, a return-trip fee may apply

Outdoor utilities may be required

For certain repairs and installations, we may require outdoor access to running water and electricity. Confirm these are available and accessible before your appointment date.

Masonry, Stone, Brick & Hearth Appearance Notice

What to expect with natural materials and chimney masonry work

Natural material variation

Natural stone, granite, slab materials, and hearth pads are unique materials and will vary in shade, veining, markings, and color.

Brick and block matching

When rebuilding or repairing chimneys, we will make every reasonable effort to match existing brick/block, but differences between old and new materials are normal due to natural variation and aging.

Mortar repointing appearance

If repointing is completed on only part of a chimney, the repaired mortar may appear different from existing mortar.

Please note: These are normal characteristics of natural building materials. Blue Flue takes pride in quality craftsmanship and will always make every reasonable effort to match existing materials. If you have questions about material appearance, please discuss with your technician before work begins.

Questions About Your Appointment?

Please address any jobsite preparation or scope questions with your Blue Flue technician before the appointment date. We want your visit to go smoothly.

  • Roof safety procedures may include the use of anchors and fall-protection equipment

Blue Flue provides chimney and dryer vent services throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio areas

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common appointment and preparation questions from Texas homeowners

How often should I schedule chimney cleaning in Texas?
Most homeowners should schedule an annual chimney inspection, and sweeping as needed based on use, fuel type, and buildup. Heavy-use fireplaces may require more frequent service.
How long before a chimney appointment should I stop using the fireplace?
Stop using the fireplace 24-36 hours before the appointment so the appliance and venting are cool and safe to inspect and service.
What if it rains on my chimney inspection day?
If roof access is unsafe due to weather, Blue Flue may complete the interior portion of the inspection and reschedule roof-access components. Crew safety always takes priority.
Do I need to be home for dryer vent cleaning?
Yes. An adult (18 years or older) with authority to approve and sign off on the completion of services must be present to provide access and approve any additional repairs if unsafe venting or damaged ducting is found.
Why does my dryer take too long to dry?
A clogged or restricted dryer vent is a common cause. Lint buildup, crushed ducting, roof vent obstructions, and disconnected vent lines can all reduce airflow and create a fire hazard.
Will Blue Flue inspect before cleaning?
For chimney services, inspection typically comes first so the technician can confirm safety and determine the correct service scope.
What happens if my jobsite is not ready when Blue Flue arrives?
If required prep work is incomplete upon arrival, a lost-time fee may apply and the project will be rescheduled. Photos documenting completed prep work may be required before our crew is dispatched for certain installations or repair appointments.
Can I request my project be completed in multiple visits?
If you request that your project be completed across multiple visits due to delays not caused by Blue Flue, a return-trip fee may apply. Please coordinate any required third-party work (electrician, plumber, HVAC, etc.) before our arrival.
Will the new brick or mortar match my existing chimney?
We make every reasonable effort to match existing brick, block, and mortar. However, differences between old and new materials are normal due to natural variation, aging, and weathering. If repointing is completed on only part of a chimney, the repaired mortar may appear different from existing mortar.
Does Blue Flue work in severe weather?
Texas weather is generally favorable for scheduling, but appointments may be rescheduled due to unsafe conditions including lightning, thunderstorms, hail, high winds, heavy rain, or unsafe roof conditions. Crew safety is always the priority.
