Preparing Your Fireplace for Winter: A DFW Checklist

Before lighting the first fire of the season, DFW homeowners should complete this checklist to ensure their fireplace is safe, efficient, and ready for winter.

Your Pre-Season Fireplace Checklist

North Texas winters bring cold fronts that make DFW homeowners reach for the fireplace. Before you light that first fire, complete this checklist to ensure safety and efficiency.

Professional Inspection and Cleaning

Schedule a Level 1 Inspection

Every fireplace should have an annual Level 1 inspection before the burning season. This covers:

  • Firebox condition
  • Damper operation
  • Visible flue condition
  • Exterior chimney condition from ground level
  • Creosote buildup assessment

Professional Cleaning If Needed

If the inspection reveals creosote buildup exceeding 1/8 inch, schedule professional cleaning before your first fire.

DIY Preparation Steps

1. Check the Damper

Open and close the damper several times. It should move freely and seal tightly when closed. Look up through the open damper – you should see daylight.

2. Inspect the Firebox

Look for cracked or missing mortar, damaged firebrick, or gaps in the firebox walls. Any damage should be repaired before use.

3. Check the Chimney Cap

From the ground, verify the chimney cap is in place and not visibly damaged. Look for bird nests or debris visible at the top.

4. Test Smoke and CO Detectors

Replace batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test each detector according to manufacturer instructions.

5. Clear the Hearth Area

Move any furniture, decorations, or combustibles at least 3 feet from the fireplace opening.

6. Stock Seasoned Firewood

Purchase or prepare seasoned hardwood (oak, hickory, pecan). Wood should have been dried for at least 6-12 months. Store firewood at least 20 feet from the house.

7. Check Your Fireplace Tools

Ensure you have a poker, tongs, shovel, and brush. Check that your fireplace screen or glass doors are in good condition.

8. Clean Out Old Ashes

Remove all but about 1 inch of ash from the firebox. Old ash absorbs moisture and can cause odors.

First Fire of the Season Tips

  1. Open the damper fully
  2. Start with a small fire using newspaper and kindling
  3. Gradually add larger pieces of wood
  4. Verify smoke is drawing up the chimney properly
  5. Check for any unusual smells or smoke entering the room
  6. Monitor for the first 30 minutes
