Level 1 Inspection: The Routine Check

A Level 1 inspection is the standard yearly check, and it’s what most homes need. It applies when your chimney is easily accessible and you’re keeping your system as-is, with no changes to how or what you burn.

During a Level 1 inspection, your technician confirms that:

• The chimney structure is sound and stable
• The flue is free of obstructions and blockages
• There’s no dangerous buildup of creosote or other combustible deposits

Think of it as the annual physical for your chimney, quick, non-invasive, and essential for catching problems early.

Level 2 Inspection: The Deeper Look

A Level 2 inspection includes everything in a Level 1, plus a closer examination of accessible attics, crawl spaces, and basements. It often adds a video scan of the interior of the flue and, when needed, a performance test like a smoke or pressure test.

You’ll need a Level 2 inspection when:

• You’re buying or selling a home (it’s required for property transfers)
• You’ve added a new heating appliance or changed the type of fuel you burn
• Your chimney has been through an operating malfunction or external event, like a chimney fire, storm, or earthquake, that may have caused hidden damage

If any of these apply to you, a Level 1 check isn’t enough.

Level 3 Inspection: The In-Depth Investigation

A Level 3 inspection is the most comprehensive. It’s called for when a Level 1 or Level 2 inspection turns up a suspected hidden hazard that can’t be evaluated without accessing concealed areas of the chimney or building.

This may involve removing components like chimney crowns or interior walls to reach concealed portions of the structure. Level 3 inspections are typically reserved for investigating serious damage or confirmed safety hazards, so they’re not common, but when they’re needed, they’re critical, and they often lead directly into the chimney repairs required to make the system safe again.

How Often Should You Have Your Chimney Inspected?

Both the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fire Protection Association recommend a chimney inspection every year. Annual inspections are one of the most effective ways to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning, two hazards that are far cheaper to prevent than to repair.
